Time's Up photo

This is a one-minute the exposure. The shutter happened to snap shut just as an oncoming car was starting a right turn. By pure luck, if you don't count the daytime scouting for likely spots to locate my tripod, the waiting for a clump of traffic from behind so that I could be sure of a few taillights balancing out the much brighter headlights, and the dozens of shots where the shutter snapped shut when nothing much was happening.

There's a dimly visible clump of trees, tall lamppost, and 25 mph speed limit sign across the street. There was suggestion to Photoshop them out, but I'm not so sure. I'm even thinking it might reinforce the narrative to boost the speed limit sign a bit. If anyone is bothered to try deciphering the narrative.

Another suggestion was to add the title to the photo, but I'm a bit resistant to that.

  1. Julie – this is a really interesting photograph. I would think that you wouldn’t want anything to distract from the progression of the white/red curved lines. So, dimming the street sign makes sense to me… unless that sign added to a “message” you wanted to reinforce.

Speaking of message…. What message would be appropriate for this image? The beauty of nighttime urban landscapes? When flying at night, I am often transfixed as I gaze downward at the moving car lights – I think about the beauty that can be created by something as destructive as a combustion engine. Of course, that’s my environmental interest coming out.

So – if this photo were to accompany an editorial article in a magazine… what would the article be about? How could you add a headline to this photo – which would not disrupt the quiet, and isolated feeling the photo imparts?

Consider the angled horizontal orange line at bottom of image… could a headline sit just below it… in a subtle way… following it’s trajectory across the page… travelling from left to right… like a car might do…. ?
